In line with His Majesty King Abdullah II’s vision for empowering youth politically through practical programs and acquainting them with the legislative and oversight roles of the Lower House, the King Abdullah II Fund for Development has announced the launch of the sixth cycle of the Parliamentary Fellowship project under the “Maharat” program.
The project aims to integrate young people into political life by offering them the opportunity to work as research assistants to Members of Parliament.
The Participants are tasked with conducting research and preparing information and supporting studies on draft laws or issues under discussion, thereby enhancing awareness of the legislative and oversight functions of Parliament and contributing to the development of a generation of youth that understand the role of MPs and forms a genuine nucleus for future legislators.
This cycle introduces a new selection mechanism that includes 30% of participants from political parties, with the percentage to gradually increase to 65% in subsequent cycles. The goal is to equip the participants with the skills needed for active engagement in political parties, to enable them to help their parties expand, develop programs that reflect the needs of local communities, and to enhance their skills in areas related to political modernization.
The project targets Jordanian youth aged between 20 and 35, with priority given to those holding degrees in public affairs-related fields such as political science, international relations, law, economics, accounting, finance, and banking. it includes an 18-day theoretical training component spread over two months, followed by a four-month practical training period within the Parliament and other official and community institutions.
Since its launch in 2019, a total of 364 young men and women have participated in the theoretical training, with 342 of them going on to complete the practical training within the House of Representatives.
